A very large heirloom watermelon that grows to nearly 30 lbs.  A traditional, old fashioned watermelon with an oblong shape, rarely seen in today's markets.  It has red flesh and gray-green skin.  Delicious fresh but also known for being a good pickling watermelon (something I've only read about and yet to experience).  This is very much a home-garden variety dating back to 1954. One of the fastest melon to ripen in the garden.  I intentionally do not have many hybrids in my collection but this is one of the must haves.  Consistently delicious with a an unusually complex flavor.  It's one of those you have to taste and then when you do, you think about it for days and end up wanting more. It's the kind you taste when away on vacation and want to return just to enjoy that amazing melon.  That kind.  And that is exactly why it's worth growing in the garden.
