Asimina triloba, the American papaw, pawpaw, paw paw, or paw-paw, among many regional names, is a small deciduous tree native to the eastern United States and Canada, producing a large, yellowish-green to brown fruit. 

Asimina is the only temperate genus in the tropical and subtropical flowering plant family Annonaceae, and Asimina triloba has the most northern range of all. This makes it America's native tropical fruit!

 Well-known tropical fruits of different genera in family Annonaceae include the custard-apple, cherimoya, sweetsop, ylang-ylang, and soursop.

The pawpaw is a patch-forming (clonal) understory tree of hardwood forests, which is found in well-drained, deep, fertile bottomland and also hilly upland habitat. Pawpaw fruits are the largest edible fruit indigenous to the United States.

Surinam cherry, scientifically known as Eugenia uniflora, is a small, round, and red to dark purple fruit native to tropical regions of South America. It is also known by various other names, including Brazilian cherry, Cayenne cherry, and pitanga. 

'Chamba' is a very productive red variety of Surinam Cherry. The taste and flavor can be quite unique and distinct, and it can vary slightly depending on the ripeness of the fruit. A unique quality of surinam cherry is the resinous flavor that is reminiscent of a freshly sliced bell pepper. This is balanced with the bursting sweetness and juiciness of the cherry. 

The variety 'Chamba' lacks some of the resinous flavor found in wilder seedling varieties. This resinous flavor can turn some away, so many will enjoy the Chamba variety since it is lower in this resin flavor and higher in sugar.

Sharwil is a very special variety, near and dear to my heart. To those who have tried them, they are often considered the best tasting avocado in the world.

Sharwil fruit vary from oval to slightly pear-shaped. The skin is green when ripe, is bumpy and of medium thickness, and peels easily (Figs. 1-4). 

The seed is small compared to fruit size, and the seed is roundish and not elongated. Most fruit weigh about 816 ounces, and about 74% of the fruit is flesh. The Sharwil avocado is a green-ripe variety and is ready to use when it is soft to the touch. Sharwil avocados have a high oil content and excellent creamy, nutty flavor. 

Sharwil avocados have an average oil content of 28%. In comparison, Hass has an average oil content of 21% (Chen et al. 2009).

Jan Boyce is the connoisseurs avocado claims Julie Frink, and she should know. Ms. Frink is the curator of the avocado variety collection at the South Coast Research Center in Irvine, the home of one of the largest avocado collections in the country, and she sometimes admits that the J.B. is her favorite avocado. 

The Jan Boyce (named after the wife of Al Boyce, entomologist and director of the U.C. Riverside Experimental Station) is richly flavored and endowed with an extremely small seed. 

The only possible complaint is that its thin skin is somewhat difficult to peel. Thank God for spoons!

Jan Boyce does well in coastal climates. It is a vigorous tree, blooms late (after the frosts are over), and it sets fruit readily.

 Expect the fruit to be ripe by the end of winter in Southern California, July on the Central Coast.

GEM is a good producer in a number of ways. One way is its consistency. All avocado varieties fluctuate in their fruit production from year to year, but GEMs yearly yield doesnt fluctuate as much as many other varieties. I have observed this on individual GEM trees, and more importantly, this has also been reported in scientific trials

GEM does also happen to be a very productive variety overall. In the same trial in Irvine mentioned above, GEM yielded more fruit in terms of weight compared to Hass and Lamb. Similar results have also been reported in a comparison between GEM and Hass in Ventura County by Brokaw Nursery.

Put another way, GEM avocado trees produce a lot of fruit on a little tree. Like GEMs behavior of producing avocados more consistently, this attribute of efficiency can also be of benefit to a backyard grower since most of us have limited square footage in our yards.
