What is Mercari Local?

Mercari Local is the easy way to shop and sell locally without all the headaches that come with meetups. You can now choose the option of shopping and selling locally without meeting up with strangers or having to pack and ship. Plus, sellers get paid much faster than when using standard shipping.

Mercari Local is perfect for heavy and bulky items that are expensive to ship, like a coffee machine or a computer monitor.

Selling with Mercari Local is easy. After listing an item simply select Mercari Local as an extra delivery method. Delivery is handled via one of our partners: Uber, FedEx SameDay® City, Dolly, or DoorDash (please see "Where is Mercari Local available?" below). A driver will pick up the item from the seller and deliver it to the buyer, contact-free.

How Mercari Local works for sellers

    We’ll match your schedule with the buyer’s. You’ll get notifications along the way.

  3. Place item for pickup

    The driver will pick up the item at your chosen time.

  4. Get paid

    You’re paid as soon as the buyer rates the transaction.

How much does it cost?

Listing is always free. When an item sells, the seller is charged a selling fee (10% of the item price) and a processing fee (2.9% + $0.50). You don’t pay a fee unless your item is sold.

For all items other than furniture, the buyer pays for the delivery which is currently $10.99.

For furniture, the buyer pays for the delivery which is 20% of the item price with a $10.99 minimum and $199 maximum.

Examples:

  • $50 chair is delivered for $10.99

  • $100 desk is delivered for $20

  • $1500 sofa is delivered for $199

The buyer will see the delivery partner and pricing as they are checking out. The seller won’t see this information when they create the listing.

What can you sell on Mercari Local?

For areas supported by Uber, FedEx SameDay® City, or DoorDash items listed with Mercari Local must weigh less than 50 lbs and fit into the trunk of a car (45" x 35" x 15").

Mercari Local is perfect for these items:

  • Home decor, from table lamps to house plants

  • Fitness gear like weights and workout bands

  • Baby stuff. This can include carriers, strollers, high chairs, and baby gates

  • Family games and outdoor activities like jigsaw puzzles, video game consoles, kids’ bikes, and small BBQs

  • Kitchenware can be bulky and heavy. List mixers, bread making machines, and baking ware

  • Home office supplies such as monitors, standing desks, and chairs

Where furniture delivery is available, and subject to size and weight requirements, Mercari Local is perfect for:

  • Bed frames

  • Coffee tables

  • Desks

  • Dining sets

  • Dressers

  • Sofas / loveseats

  • TV stands

How to prepare your item for Local delivery

Item sold? Now it’s time to pack it up for delivery. Here’s how it works:

  1. Prep the item

    If necessary, wrap your item to protect it from damage during transport.

  2. Pack it up

    Place your item into a sealed bag or box. If it’s fragile, please package with care.

  3. Don’t forget the details

    Label your package with the buyer’s address, including unit or apartment number, if applicable.

Keep in mind that there may be bumps or sudden stops while your item is in transit. For fragile items like electronics or glassware, package them with care and label the package as fragile. You can also add pickup notes in the app.

If your item is heavy and weighs more than 10 lbs, wrap and package it in something strong that can be carried from the vehicle to the doorstep.

If multiple items are being delivered, package them together in either a bag or a box.

Currently, our local carriers include: Uber, FedEx SameDay® City, Dolly, and DoorDash. We will choose the best option based on distance and service availability.

How to prepare furniture for pickup

If your item is a piece of furniture to be picked up by Dolly (available in select cities), movers will retrieve the item from your room of choice - there’s no need to move it yourself. If disassembly is required though, please do so before they arrive. They'll then secure the item for transit.

How to ensure the best delivery experience

We ask that sellers take a few extra steps to make sure the item is safely picked up by the driver.

Leave detailed pickup instructions in the Mercari app to guide the driver to your pickup spot. You can do this contact-free — there’s no need to meet the driver in person. For example, you can text the driver instructions like “Please don’t ring the doorbell. I’ll leave the item on my doorstep right next to the entry mat.”

For buyers, make sure your apartment number is address line 2. We ask the seller to label the item with your name and apartment number.

Leave detailed dropoff instructions in the Mercari app to guide the driver to your dropoff spot. Except for furniture delivery, you can do this contact-free — there’s no need to meet the driver in-person. For example, you can text the driver instructions like, "Please ring the doorbell and call me when you’re outside."

Our delivery partners

Except for furniture delivery, we’ll choose the best delivery partner for you based on the price, time of the day, and the distance between the buyer and the seller. We have partnered with Uber and FedEx SameDay® City to safely deliver your items locally.

How does Uber work?

Uber’s on-demand platform allows you to schedule a pickup and delivery time between 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM local time, Monday through Sunday. At this time, Uber does not go across bridges or on any freeways with tolls.

We ask sellers to have the item ready at the scheduled pickup time. Please be ready; the driver won’t wait longer than 5 minutes.

How does FedEx SameDay® City work?

FedEx SameDay® City provides local delivery from the pickup location. You can schedule your pickup ready time between 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM local time and the order will be delivered by 8:00 PM that day, Monday - Friday.

If you need your item right away, FedEx SameDay® City provides weekend delivery for an additional $40 surcharge.

We ask sellers to have the item ready at the scheduled pickup time. To provide you the most affordable delivery, the driver will pick the item up within 4 hours from the scheduled pickup time.

We’ll let you know when the driver is on their way with an SMS message. Please be ready; they won’t wait longer than 5 minutes.

How does Dolly work?

For furniture delivery, Dolly provides local delivery from the seller’s pickup location. You can choose your preferred two-hour pickup window between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM local time and the order will be delivered by 8:00 PM that day (pending driver availability).

We ask sellers to have the item ready at the scheduled pickup time. We’ll let you know when the driver is on their way with an SMS message. Please be ready; they won’t wait longer than 30 minutes.

How does DoorDash work?

DoorDash’s on-demand platform allows you to schedule a pickup and delivery time between 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM local time, Monday through Sunday. At this time, DoorDash does not go across bridges or on any freeways with tolls.

We ask sellers to have the item ready at the scheduled pickup time. Please be ready; the driver won’t wait longer than 5 minutes.

How Mercari Local protects buyers and sellers

All drivers are vetted by our delivery partners (Uber, FedEx SameDay® City, Dolly, or DoorDash) so you can have the peace of mind that your item is in safe hands at all times. In case something does go wrong, Mercari includes $200 Shipping Protection with every Mercari Local order. If your item is lost in transit or if the buyer files a return for “damaged in transit,” Mercari’s Shipping Protection has you covered.

You can chat with Mercari customer service at any time while the order is active or if there are any issues after the item is delivered. Just message us through your Order Status page in the app.

How do I add Mercari Local to my existing listings?

Our fast opt-in feature lets you update multiple listings with Mercari Local at the same time. You can find the notification on your listings page.

We’ll let you know when Mercari Local is the same price or cheaper than standard shipping. It’s perfect for those bulky items that are expensive to ship. Plus, you’ll get more eyes on your listings as we notify buyers about local deals.

Mercari Local delivery via FedEx SameDay® City is currently available in 16 markets. These include Houston, Washington DC / Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas / Fort Worth, Charlotte, Detroit, Denver, Minneapolis / St. Paul, Sacramento, St. Louis, Cleveland, Portland, Phoenix, Memphis and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mercari Local furniture delivery via Dolly is currently available in five markets: Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Orange County, Portland OR, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mercari Local delivery via DoorDash is currently available in three markets: Houston, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
