Many winters ago farmers noticed the wind piled the snow deepest on the downward side of a fence and left a clean-swept area just beyond. They began putting up fences some distance upwind from their roads so the deep drifts would form there and leave the roads clear. So, every fall, along with storing the harvest and piling up the firewood, there is the chore of putting up the snowfences. An excellent stitchery in crewel yarn.
