What is an IMEI number?
Every phone or Mobile Broadband device on a GSM network has a unique 15 digit code, called an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. Mobile service providers can block a phone based on it's IMEI in cases where it's been reported stolen or the bill is past due.
What is an MEID number?
If your phone has been assigned a Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) number instead of an IMEI number, that means it operates on a CDMA network. Like an IMEI number, mobile service providers can block a device based on it’s MEID number when it’s been reported stolen or the bill is past due.
Where to find your IMEI or MEID
The fastest method of checking the IMEI/MEID number on your phone is to open your keypad and type:
- On the original packaging
- On the sim card tray
- Under Settings: Go to Settings > General > About
- On the original packaging
- On the back of the physical device
- Underneath the battery housing on some phones
- Under Settings: Go to Settings > About Phone > Status > IMEI/MEID Information
How can an IMEI/MEID protect you?
Mobile carriers operate on two different platforms, GSM and CDMA, and not all phones are compatible on both. We ask sellers to include the IMEI or MEID number when listing an iPhone so that you can shop with confidence. There are several websites where you can check the status of phones based on the IMEI/MEID. We recommend checking the IMEI/MEID prior to purchase to ensure the device will operate on your carrier’s network and that a carrier has not blocked a phone for any reason. Once you receive a mobile device you have purchased on Mercari make sure the IMEI/MEID matches the listing. If you have received a device with a different IMEI/MEID or a device that has been IMEI/MEID locked, please reach out to our support team.
