What is Zip?

Zip is an installment payment platform that lets you pay for your purchase in installments using a credit or debit card. When you choose Zip to purchase items on Mercari, Zip automatically splits the purchase amount into 4 payments over 6 weeks*. This allows you to enjoy your item now and pay for it later.

Check any listing for the Zip logo to see if it’s eligible.

For sellers, when someone purchases using Zip, nothing changes. You ship the item in the same way you always have upon sale and when the transaction is complete, you’re paid in full.

How do I sign up?

At check out, click Zip as the payment option. This begins the account creation process with Zip.

How do I use Zip?

  1. Check an item’s listing page for the Zip logo
  2. At checkout, choose Zip as a payment method
  3. Sign up or sign in with Zip during checkout
  4. Get approved right away
  5. You’ll be charged 25% of your payment and any applicable Zip Finance Charge, shipping, and taxes may apply at checkout*

Please note that a Zip Finance Charge, shipping and taxes may apply depending on the state you live in. If applicable, this fee will be divided in 4 and paid alongside your installments*.

The seller will ship out your item within 3 days, as usual. Your installments will be automatically paid over 6 weeks, 25% every two weeks* along with any Zip Finance Charge, shipping, and taxes that may apply.

Can I use Zip on multiple items?

Yes! You can use Zip when you purchase one or more eligible items in the Mercari app. Enjoy your wish list now and pay over time in 4 easy installments, over 6 weeks*.

Here’s how:

  1. Check the listing for the Zip logo to see if it's eligible
  2. Add one or more items to your shopping cart
  3. When you’re finished shopping, proceed to checkout
  4. At checkout, you can change your payment to select Zip as a payment method
    • If you’re unable to see Zip as a payment option, it means your cart is not eligible for Zip
  5. You can sign up with Zip or sign into Zip if you’re already registered
  6. Get your approval decision in just a few minutes
  7. Complete checkout using Zip

What are the benefits of Zip?

With Zip, you can split your Mercari purchase into 4 easy installments* rather than paying all at once. This gives your more flexibility when you shop — you don’t need to wait to buy your next big-ticket item. Zip doesn’t perform a hard credit check, so there is no impact to your credit score.

For sellers, this means more buyers will now be able to purchase your items. And sellers receive the full payment at the close of the transaction, just like before.

What information does Zip ask for?

Zip requires your legal name, address, date of birth, a US mobile number, and either a US debit or credit card to sign up.

Heads up, Zip requires a mobile phone number and text message verification to log-in, instead of a traditional username and password.

Who can use Zip?

To create a Zip account, you must:

  • Live in the US & have a valid US mailing address
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a valid and verifiable US mobile number
  • Use a US credit or debit card to make a purchase

How can I access my Zip account and orders?

You can check current and past orders on the Zip Customer Portal. Simply log in to view your account by entering your mobile number or email address. You can log in to the customer portal here.

Is there a service fee for using Zip?

Customers may be charged finance charges, late fees, and convenience fees if applicable. For more information on finance charges, please check out Zip’s Help Center.

Will I be notified before I am charged for a payment?

Yes! Zip notifies customers with reminders three days and one day before each payment is due, by SMS and email. Access the Zip app to see your payment due dates or update your payment method.

When is my first Zip payment due?

Your first Zip payment for your purchase is due when you check out. The remaining payments will be billed automatically over time. You will be able to see your payment schedule prior to completion of your purchase.

Can I make Zip payments early?

Of course. If you want to make a payment, log into the Zip app or customer portal, select the orders tab and choose the payment you want to make early. For more information about how to make an early payment, please go to Zip’s Help Center.

Can I have multiple payments/orders at once with Zip?

Yes! It’s possible to have multiple Zip orders at once. You can manage your payments across multiple orders in the Zip app or customer portal.

How do I update my payment method for Zip (including existing Zip orders)?

All payments for your order will debit from the payment method you used to check out initially.

If you need to change your payment method for future payments on an order, you can do so in the Zip app or customer portal.

Can I use another form of payment with Zip?

Yes! You can also use your Mercari balance, Mercari credits, or a coupon with Zip to pay for your purchase, as long as the item is eligible.

If you use more than one form of payment, the net amount after balance, credit, and coupon application will be charged to your Zip account.

Example: You make a $100 purchase including any shipping, sales tax, payment fee, service fee, and Zip finance fee. You pay $20 in balance, $10 in credits and $10 with a coupon. The remaining amount to pay is $60. Your Zip account will be charged for a total of $60. You pay the first initial installment of $15 at checkout. The remaining 3 installments of $15 each will be charged every two weeks. If a Zip Finance Charge, shipping or taxes are applicable, it will be divided in 4* and paid with each installment.

Are there any transaction limits with Zip?

Each transaction is assessed before it is approved. Please note that Zip does not approve every order. Zip considers a variety of factors to determine approvals and spend limits. If you are a repeat purchaser and have made all your repayments in time, you’ll likely receive a higher limit than someone who is a new customer.

What if I have trouble paying my Zip installments?

Your payments are set to debit automatically on their due dates, but if you are having trouble paying you can potentially request a payment date change. Find out how in Zip’s help center.

If your payment method becomes invalid or expires or is unable to be processed, you may be charged a late fee. For more information on late fees, please go to Zip’s help center. To avoid late fees, update your payment information in the Zip app or customer portal.

When will my items be delivered if I use Zip?

Zip orders follow Mercari’s standard purchase process. Sellers will be notified to ship as soon as you make your purchase.

Why was I not approved or eligible to use Zip?

There are many factors that determine Zip approval or eligibility. Please contact Zip Support for more information.

What happens if I cancel or return an order purchased with Zip for a refund?

Zip returns follow Mercari’s standard cancelations & returns process. As soon as the refund is processed from the Mercari side, Zip will be notified of the refund. Have more questions about Zip returns? Go to Login.

In cases where orders are canceled and a full refund must be issued, customers are only refunded the amount they have paid to date via their installments, excluding non-refundable Mercari fees. When Zip is notified of the return/refund by Mercari, Zip cancels all future payments and your account will be adjusted to reflect the amount paid to date. Refunds can take 2-3 business days to process, depending on the financial institution.

Example: You make a $100 purchase including any shipping, sales tax, payment fee, service fee, and Zip Finance Charge. You pay the first initial installment of $25 at checkout. Later, the order is canceled. A refund of $25 is issued, and the remaining installments (which total out to $75) will be canceled by Zip.

If your entire order is canceled or returned, the Zip Finance Charge, shipping, and taxes, if applicable, will be refunded. Some of Mercari fees will not be refunded. If there is a partial refund or if part of an order is canceled or returned, the Zip Finance Charge will not be refunded. In the event of a partial refund, scheduled payments are reduced/canceled first, and then paid installments for the refund amount are refunded to your original payment method. Why did I receive a partial refund from Zip for my order?

When a partial refund is issued in cases such as sales tax adjustment, Zip will reduce the last installment amount by the amount that was refunded. If the refund amount is greater than the last installment amount, Zip will deduct the partial refund from your last and second to last installment, and so on. Learn more here.

Is there a minimum amount I can spend with Zip?

The amount you can spend with Zip at checkout varies by merchant. On Mercari, the minimum purchase with Zip is $16.

How can I check my Zip orders and account information?

To manage your Zip orders or account, change a payment date, or make a payment, use the Zip app. Alternatively, you can use the Zip customer portal.

*Zip can only be used for US purchases. Certain merchant, product, goods, and service restrictions apply. Loans to California residents, other than loans through the Zip App, Zip checkout, and Zip Card, are made or arranged pursuant to California Lenders Law license. For example, for a $335 purchase, you’d make four $85.25 payments every two weeks starting today for a 31.11% annual percentage rate and a total of payments of $341. A $6 installment fee is charged at commencement - you pay $1.50 of this fee as a prepaid finance charge when you make your initial payment today. The remaining $4.50 is included in your future payments. Actual installment fees vary and can range from $0 to $7.50 depending on the purchase price and Zip product used. Actual amount of fee for your purchase will be reflected in checkout. Estimation of installment payment and annual percentage rate excludes potential tax and shipping costs. Zip Pay Anywhere and Zip Checkout financing through Zip issued by WebBank, except for Zip-originated loans in CO, NV, MA, and MD. All loans are subject to credit approval.
