1943 Lincoln Wheat Cents look like "silver pennies" but they are actually made out of steel. During World War II: The US needed to allocate as much copper as possible for the war effort and this included copper used for minting Lincoln Cents at the US Mint. Zinc-coated steel was used as the substitute metal composition and hence the new silver-like coin is known as the "wartime steel cent" or "steel penny".

Antique EKCO OVENEX Baking/Loaf Pans

This is a beautiful 1947 Wheat Cent in Brilliant About Uncirculated condition.   It is a deep red color with a Brilliant shine finish. Pretty amazing for a 75 year old coin! I listed a very rare 1924D tonight also and a Double mintmark 1943D steel Wheat cent as well.  I will be listing S MINTS and early dates over the next couple of weeks.  Thanks for stopping by.

This 1943-S, D & P Set is a collector's item because of the STEEL MATERIAL its fashioned out of. In WWII the US Government needed Copper for ammunition so they started making pennies out of steel instead of copper. However after the war the public noticed thier pennies would deteriorate quickly due to the oxidation of the steel so by popular demand they returned to copper pennies.  If you do find a 1943 penny made of copper it is worth a fortune bc it's an error. That means someone left the copper sheet in the machine from the last batch so only those were minted. This set is pricex about half my Brilliant UNCIRCULATED set is priced. Still a great set
