Lovely white with gold trim hinged trinket box or small jewelry box
Unmarked but possibly Mele & Co Made in Japan 1940s
Fabric padded lid cover features the Fragonard painting “Portrait of a Young Girl Reading”
Four corner feet give it a raised elegant look
Inside bottom compartment lined with a soft corduroy like red fabric—underside of lid is gold
Ornate design of roses and vines in the gilt-like trim—the body is a hard white material, possibly painted metal
Underside is textured gold with intricate curl design (see enlarged photo) and 4 small curved feet at the corners
3 1/4” x 3 1/4” x 2 1/8” tall x 1 1/2” deep
Weighs nearly 13 ounces
Some wear to gold on trim, hinge, and feet consistent with age and use—a few nicks on white inlay—hinge works perfectly, inner lining is clean and intact
Missing its Made in Japan and maker sticker (others like it have that sticker)

This is a fantastic Mele children's music jewelry box that is in excellent vintage condition. The box opens to a dancing ballerina and music. It is an endearing scene with a girl and butterflies on the outside.The box is 5.75" wide x 4.25" deep and 3.25" tall. Please see all the photos. If you’d like more please just ask, I’d be happy to send you more. Please keep in mind when buying any of my found items that vintage means were made before 1984 and have been used. Adding to the charm and character of the piece it is 1000% normal to have signs of wear, use and age.
