EXCELLENT SHAPE: Does not appear to have been used — slight rubbing of gold on edge of side handles, minor slight rubbing of gold on few parts of rim. Some markings on the outer rim of the bottom porcelain. Picture inside bottom seems in tact.

Vintage Hand Painted Nippon Celery Dish 8” x 4” with Punk and Blue Flowers.

This lovely dish is the perfect size for side dishes. It is 6" long by 5.5" wide and about 2.75" deep. The dish is hand painted displaying a beautiful floral bouquet. It has a gilded rim, handles and feet. 

What makes this rare -

This piece is marked with the Noritake "M". This is known as the Noritake Maruki (often called Komaru) Mark, the M (for Morimura) Wreath Mark. The Mark also includes "Nippon" and made in Japan. 
Between 1890 and 1921 the company marked their export China with 'Nippon' in western characters. These Nippon marks can date pieces to the 1890 to 1921 period, before the McKinley Tariff act demanded 'Japan' was used.

After the first World War all Noritake production was marked 'Japan' or 'Made in Japan' to comply with the McKinley Tariff Act, and Nippon was only very rarely used after 1921.

The condition is very good considering its age with no chips, cracks or scratches.

The "Nippon" era lasted from 1891 until 1921.  This was due to the McKinley Tariff Act which required that all porcelain be marked with the country of origin.  "Nippon" literally translates to "Japan".  The US changed its position in 1921 requiring products to be marked "Japan".

I don't know a lot about this little dish other than it's antique hand painted small dish from Japan I believe. I was told that pre ww2 imported items from Japan could the makers stamp, post war all items from Japan had to have the made in Japan stamp or sticker on it.
