We’ve looked at many versions of Notre-Dame du Perpetual-Secours but this one caught our eye. One of the things we liked about it is the sweet smile of Mary. She’s helping out of compassion and love. And we loved the cheerful colors. Our Mother seems very warm and inviting to us, as well as to her Son. She’s always there to help. That’s why they say her help is “perpetual.” It never ends.

This holy card is based on a statue in the basilica of Our Lady of Victory, Notre Dame des Victoires, in Paris. Therese of Lisieux prayed before the statue for help in becoming a nun when she was otherwise too young. The church has been very popular for many people desiring bold victory by our Blessed Mother. 

The basilica was finished in 1740. Over the next century, it had trouble existing as a parish. After the Blessed Mother spoke to him in a vision, the cure, Charles Desgenettes, dedicated the church to her Immaculate Heart.  Immediately, the parish went from having a dozen people at mass to having four hundred.

Jesus Christ Lenticular Poster

This is a close-up photo of the actual tilma. As a Catholic artist, I have taken the liberty of restoring some of the faded color while preserving its antique and original look. I used colored pencils as well as Photoshop.
 
In 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas, Empress of Latin America, and Protectress of Unborn Children. She is one of my all-time favorites.

Our Lady of Guadalupe – 8.5x11" print

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared miraculously on the cloak of Juan Diego, a simple indigenous peasant, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City on December 12, 1531. Today it is displayed in the Basilica of Guadalupe nearby, the most visited Catholic shrine in the world.  Pope John Paul II declared her patroness of the Americas.

I painted my version in acrylics and colored pencil on paper.

Adam and Eve illustrations are very common in the history of Christian art, but pictures showing God in the act of Creation before He made Adam are extremely rare. This shows the 6th Day just after He has made the birds and animals but before He made Adam. 

It’s from a late Medieval breviary, made by Flemish Dominican monks, a gift from a nobleman to Queen Isabella, the one who funded Christopher Columbus. 

It is an idyllic, beautiful scene because God made things good. It would look good on any wall, but it also could be used as a talking game with children, naming the animals. Is that a unicorn? Is that a blue rabbit? A nice reminder of God as the maker of all things, regardless of His methods.
