Mercari’s price limit

When you purchase or list on Mercari, there’s usually a $2,000 price limit. When you want to list or purchase items verified with Authenticate at up to $5,000, we’ll ask you to complete an additional identity verification.

To make it happen, we ask that you verify your identity. This process collects and verifies your identity using your legal name, address, date of birth, and last four digits of your Social Security Number.

We use a national database to verify your information. In some cases, we might ask that you include additional documents or information such as a driver’s license or other government issued identification.

The information you provide will only be used for identification purposes and will not be sold or rented to third parties without your consent. For more information on the data we collect and how we store it, please see our Privacy Policy.

Once your information is submitted for review, we’ll give you an update on your submission’s status and your eligibility to purchase and sell authenticated items up to $5,000.

We reserve the right to deny any submission when conducting our review, as your safety is our top priority.

Why do you need to verify my Identity to lift my transaction limit?

Mercari is a regulated financial institution called a Money Service Business (MSB). Similar to a bank, we are legally required to verify identities of our customers. Instead of collecting this information when you open an account, we collect and verify this data at certain account or transaction limits. To verify, please see our Licensing page.

What information is needed to verify my identity?

You’ll need to submit the following:

  • First and last name
  • Residential address (P.O. Boxes are not acceptable)
  • Date of birth
  • SSN
  • US government-issued ID
    • State ID
    • State Driver’s License
    • US Passport
  • Supplemental documentation

Mercari will only use this information for identification purposes. We do not rent or sell your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes without your consent. You can read more about this in our Privacy Policy.

Once your information is submitted for review, we’ll give you an update on your submission’s status and your eligibility to purchase and sell authenticated items up to $5,000.

Depending on your submitted identification, we might not be able to validate it and might encounter issues verifying your identity. If you received a notification that we’re unable to validate your ID, and you think there’s been an error, contact us using the form below. Please be aware that we may need additional documentation.

We reserve the right to deny any submission when conducting our review, as your safety is our top priority.

How does this differ from ID Validation?

ID Validation is a badge that helps increase trust among members of our community. By confirming selected info about your identity, you’ll earn a badge for your profile that shows you’re really you. We won’t share your personal info with anyone else. Learn more about ID Validation here.
