What is Venmo?

Venmo is a digital wallet platform that lets you pay for your purchases easily using a credit card, debit card, Venmo balance, or bank account. It also allows you to split payments with other Venmo users and share your purchases on your Venmo feed. For the most optimal experience, we recommend updating your Mercari (iOS | Android) and Venmo apps to the latest version.

1. How do I use Venmo on Mercari?

You can choose to pay with the Venmo option during checkout. If you already have an existing Venmo account, you will need to link your Venmo with Mercari when using it the first time for checkout.

Note: Once you’ve connected Venmo to your Mercari account, this will now be your default payment option.

2. I’m purchasing an item on Mercari and a seller requests payment outside of Mercari, what should I do?

Only transactions that take place on Mercari are covered by Mercari’s protections. We can’t protect you if your sale, purchase, or payment takes place outside of Mercari.

3. Will I be able to split purchases on Mercari with another user?

Yes. After completing your checkout and paying with Venmo on Mercari, you'll see your recent Mercari purchase on your Venmo feed. Click "split" to split your payment with another Venmo user.

4. What happens if I want to cancel or return an item for a refund, but I have already split my purchase costs with others?

If an item is eligible for return, Mercari will only return the full amount to the original buyer who made the purchase. The original buyer is responsible for either refunding or requesting the amount of money they’ve already split with others. See our refunds and return policy here.

5. If I’m a seller on Mercari, will I be able to “request” a payment from the buyer?

No, you will not be able to request a specific payment type on Mercari. All payments must be processed on Mercari. Please see our Financial Safety Guidelines for more information.

6. How do I change my preferred payment method on Venmo?

To change your preferred payment method on Venmo, go to the “Me” tab by tapping your picture or initials. Then, tap the Settings gear in the top right, select "Payment Methods" and update your preferences.

Note: You may be prompted to select or change the pre-selected payment method during your next checkout. You can complete this by tapping on the payment method shown at the bottom of the screen. You cannot change the payment method once you complete the transaction. For a smooth check-out experience, check the payment method before completing your purchase.

Tip: Make an offer using Venmo

Love the items but looking for a better price? Tap “Make offer” to name your price and send an offer to the seller.

Before you do so, please make sure you’ve linked Venmo to your Mercari account. Once you’ve connected Venmo, you’re ready to tap on the “Make offer” button to send your offer to the seller. Happy shopping
