Description

Social History: Mailed in 1930, just as the Great Depression was taking hold, this card represents a somber time in America when patriotic symbols like the Tomb were deeply significant to the public. Postal History: This card features a collectible "AIR-MAIL SAVES TIME" slogan cancellation. These machine cancels were used in the late 1920s and early 30s as a government-backed marketing campaign to promote the use of the new, faster air mail service. The card is signed by Jennie S. Crockett and Ella F. Card, and mailed to Mrs. L. C. Parker in Portland, Maine Scene: This is a "three-in-one" card. You get the Tomb, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument all in one frame. The tomb was a major pilgrimage site for families who had lost loved ones overseas; for many, this sarcophagus represented their own "unknown" sons. The back features a lengthy and moving descriptive text, including a quote from President Warren G. Harding. Era: White Border Era (1915–1930) Publisher: B.S. R
