Description
This is a set of 2 identical cups. Top text reads 仙臺 "Sendai" (the place) Middle right and middle left text combines to read 鎮臺 "Sendai Garrison" Bottom text is a cursive simplified form of 凱旋 "Victorious return" 鎮臺 was an imperial Japanese army institution formed in April 1872 and dissolved in 1888 where it was transformed into the 2nd division dating these cups to 1872-1888. I found a flag almost identical to the one on the left only with 1 less black line that was used by the 2nd division but I can't find any specific Sendai Garrison flags, given the 2nd division used a similar flag and the Sendai Garrison became the 2nd division I think it's logical to assume the flag on the left is a specific Sendai Garrison flag. Given the "Victorious return" terminology it's likely the soldier who owned this cup 138+ years ago participated in a specific conflict.
