Description
The Salad — Wendell Berry | North Point Press, Berkeley, California, 1980 | First Edition Chapbook A scarce first edition of this single-poem chapbook from North Point Press, one of Berry's several small-format poetry publications from 1980 — the same year as A Part and The Wheel. The Salad is Berry's own rendering of Pierre de Ronsard's "La Salade," a Renaissance pastoral poem about gathering wild herbs for a salad, meditative and rooted in the rhythms of the natural world — themes central to Berry's own agrarian vision. The poem is presented in a slim chapbook format on cream paper in sage green wraps with a lettuce drawing by Bruce McGaw on the cover. Published by North Point Press at 850 Talbot Avenue, Berkeley — the beloved small press that published Berry, Gary Snyder, and many others throughout the 1980s before its closure in 1991. A quiet, beautiful object from a distinguished press.
